Born in Frévent, Pas-de-Calais, Antoine-Adrien Lamourette was vicar general of Arras and, during the revolution of 1789, became constitutional bishop of Rhône-et-Loire (February 1791). He was elected deputy to the Legislative Assembly, where he took his place with the political center. Wanting to put an end to the political quarrels between the Right (the feuillants) and the Left (jacobins, cordeliers), he gave a impassioned speech (July 7, 1792) that was followed by a general embrace among the delegates. But it was only an ephemeral reconciliation, which became famously known by the ironic name of "baiser [kiss of] Lamourette." Lamourette was opposed to the September massacres of 1792 and was executed during the Terror.
